Chef Lee Chinese Restaurant
11000 Kentucky Springs Rd, Mineral, VA 23117, USALive Scout Deep Dive
Tucked into the far end of the New Bridge Landing shopping plaza right along Kentucky Springs Road, Chef Lee Chinese Restaurant holds an indispensable position in the Lake Anna dining landscape. In a rural lake region where culinary options lean heavily toward lakeside taverns, barbecue joints, and marina bar grills, Chef Lee stands as the sole dedicated Chinese eatery serving the immediate Lake Anna corridor. For decades, it has served as an easy, low-stress stop for vacation home renters unpacking their groceries from the adjacent Food Lion, boaters dragging off the water sun-drenched and starving, and local Mineral residents seeking quick takeout comfort.
Visiting Chef Lee is all about managing expectations and embracing its role as a classic, small-town strip-mall Chinese fixture. It does not aim to deliver metropolitan high-end dim sum or hyper-regional Sichuan experimentation; instead, it provides approachable American-Chinese comfort food served in generous portions. Understanding its rhythm, its strengths, and peak-hour quirks makes the difference between an effortless lake vacation meal and a frustrating wait.
Aesthetics & Atmosphere: Casual Lakeside Comfort
The interior of Chef Lee presents an unpretentious, traditional Chinese restaurant aesthetic. Stepping inside from the summer heat or crisp autumn breeze, you are met with a surprisingly spacious and neat dining room outfitted with deep booths, wide wooden tables, and familiar cultural decor, from ornamental wall scrolls to soft red and golden accents. It is thoroughly casual—there is zero dress code here. You will regularly see guests dining in boat shorts, flip-flops, and sun hats fresh from a pontoon outing alongside multi-generational family reunions staying in nearby waterfront rentals.
Because a significant portion of Chef Lee's business revolves around takeout, the dining room itself rarely feels crowded or deafening, making it a peaceful refuge if you want a sit-down meal away from the buzzing dockside patios. The soundtrack is typically gentle ambient murmur punctuated by the ringing phone at the front counter, where host staff juggle a relentless stream of evening call-in orders from around the lake.
Local Tip
If you plan to order takeout on a Friday or Saturday between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM during the summer season, call your order in at least 45 minutes to an hour ahead. The single pickup counter gets bombarded with calls from arriving weekend renters, and wait times at the counter can back up quickly.
Arrival, Parking & Strategic Timing
Logistically, Chef Lee is one of the easiest spots to access in the entire lake basin. Anchored in the Food Lion center, parking is never an issue. The vast, well-lit asphalt lot offers ample room for large SUVs, minivans, and even trucks towing boat trailers, provided you park along the outer perimeter. Its location makes it extraordinarily convenient to combine grocery runs, bait-and-tackle errands, and dinner pickup in a single trip.
Timing is critical. The kitchen operates at its sharpest and fastest during the weekday lunch rush and early afternoon dinners. If you dine in or order between 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM, you can take advantage of the prompt lunch specials, which come complete with fried rice and choice of soup or egg roll at wallet-friendly prices. Conversely, the Sunday post-church crowd and weekend check-in hours create bottleneck rushes where service can stretch thin.
Navigating the Menu: What to Order & What to Skip
Chef Lee features a vast menu covering standard Cantonese, Szechuan, and Hunan staples. While long-time regulars appreciate the variety, local wisdom suggests sticking to the restaurant's proven core competencies to ensure a great meal.
The appetizers and soups are reliable starters. The hot and sour soup offers a peppery warmth that hits the spot on cooler spring or fall evenings, while the wonton and egg drop soups are comforting standards. The pork egg rolls arrive crisp and golden. For main courses, sweet and tangy poultry dishes generally shine brightest: the Orange Chicken and Sesame Chicken are lake-crowd favorites, boasting a crispy batter and hearty glaze. The classic chicken lo mein and vegetable delight dishes are also safe, reliable options that travel well back to your rental cabin.
Conversely, transparent local feedback indicates that fried rice is relatively basic—seasoned primarily with soy sauce without heavy additions of eggs or mixed diced vegetables. Appetizers like crab rangoon and spare ribs can be inconsistent in texture depending on the kitchen's rush level. If you are particular about meat tenderness, opt for poultry or shrimp preparations over beef or pork spareribs for the best consistency.

The Local Take: Making the Most of Your Visit
Ask full-time Lake Anna residents about Chef Lee and they will tell you straight: it fills an essential culinary niche in an area with sparse international cuisine options. While it may not rival big-city Chinatown venues, it is an authentic small-town operation that solves the age-old vacation question: "Who has the energy to cook dinner after seven hours in the sun?"
To get the premier experience, dine in if you want immediate hot-off-the-wok plates and attentive hospitality, or place your takeout order mid-afternoon ahead of the dinner rush. Grab a stack of white paper takeout boxes, grab cold beverages from the market next door, and spread your feast out on your lakehouse dock as the sun sets over the water.
Local Tip
Check your takeout bag before driving back down the gravel access roads to your rental. While the kitchen packs orders securely, sauces and extra condiments can be easily missed during intense evening rushes, and a 20-minute drive back to the plaza is the last thing you will want to do once you are settled in.

"The food was disgraceful. It looked so good we all thought this is going to be good. NO the ribs were gritty and tasted a bit burnt as well the portion for the cost was absolutely ridiculous the chicken (in the general Tso’s was so hard it couldn’t be chewed. The beef and broccoli the beef was chewy and just didn’t have a good taste and the pork lo mein tasted old. I was already tired it had been a long day so when I went in I just wanted to place our order and go home still about 10-15 min down the road. The lady kept answering the phone and taking phone orders which was my clue to leave and go somewhere else but I didn’t . After 3 phone orders I placed my order and totaling $85.00 This is the second time I’ve come here and the food was not all the good, but it is the last. It may be more of a drive but the place in Louisa by Joes is so much better and cheaper plus I included a picture of the Togo box the difference in size was almost 2x bigger. Prices for everything have gone up and that’s understandable but at some point you’re just getting ripped off to us that was last night. Out of the 5 things all of us combined only ate 1 container total. We fixed a frozen pizza because non of us could eat it"
"Husband asked if the fri3d dumplings had cabbage in them and waitress told him no. We ordered that and crab rangoon for appetizers. Fried dumplings had cabbage and husband didn't like. The crab rangoon was ok but outer part was tough to chew. My vegetable fried rice was good, husband didn't care for the chicken fried rice. We feel like we shouldn't have had to pay for the dumplings but we did...we wont be going back. I was using the duck sauce bottle and the waitress took it to fill it up and never brought it back..."
"Great for a local Chinese. Just about the only option in the area. Large dining space perfect for the family. I’d definitely stop in after a long lake day. Quick service and reasonable pricing. We always order pick up and super friendly staff, with little to no wait time. Little to no English barrier and located at the end of the food lion shopping center, with more than enough parking."
