Boating Tip
"Check the weather before you launch, keep your safety gear ready, and support the local bait shops and guides who know this lake best."
"Happy" The Bass
Happy is Lake Anna’s official/unofficial mascot, first appearing in the early 1980s. A legendary retro-cool local who has witnessed the entire evolution of the lake since the gates closed in 1972!
- 🐟Deep-Water Roots: Swam down Edenton's flooded farmland channels in '72. Remembers when Sturgeon Creek was just a hand-dug dirt ramp!
- 🟢The Mission: Strong crusader for catch-and-release to foster monster 9-pounders. Tracks "trophy freckles" (crappie) across all 200+ miles of LKA shorelines.
- ❄️The Thermocline: Spans the 14°F warmer Private hot side & cool Public body. November White Perch are his absolute season highlight!

Public Side vs Private Side Water
Water clarity is good in many areas, with timber, docks, grass edges, and channel transitions all worth watching.
Work topwater stickbaits along deep bridge structures and floating docks at morning light. Keep a steady swimbait retrieval over mud flats.
"The public cold side has significantly denser vegetation. Concentrate deep dragging lines inside pockets around Lake Anna State Park."
Lake Anna Live: Cool Summer Vibrations & Tight Lines
"With glassy waters and a gentle southern breeze, it's a prime morning to cruise the lake or drop live shad on schooling stripers before they slip into the deep channels as the sun heats up."
Hey there, Lake Anna family! It's a gorgeous, sun-drenched early June day, and the vibe out here is totally irie. Water temps on our public 'cold' side are hanging in the comfortable mid-to-upper 70s, while the private 'hot' side is already sizzling up to 84°F around Dike 2. This temperature spike means our fish are shifting heavily into summer patterns. Striper icon Jim Hemby recommends capitalizing on the early morning downline bite downlake and around the splits before the high sun pushes those schools deep into the 25 to 45-foot flats. For the largemouth hunters, Chris McCotter's local intel points to post-spawn bass hovering along deep vegetation edges—work those weed tops aggressively with topwaters early, or transition to lipless crankbaits on the warm side. Finally, a friendly heads-up from our local boating crew: keep an eye out for floating logs and storm debris near the North Anna arm if you are cruising early. Stay relaxed, soak up the sun, and let the good times roll!
