Big Cheese Pizza
11004 Kentucky Springs Rd, Mineral, VA 23117, USALive Scout Deep Dive
Tucked along Kentucky Springs Road in Mineral, Big Cheese Pizza fulfills a very specific, indispensable need in the Lake Anna ecosystem: unpretentious, high-calorie, fast-turnaround comfort food. When you have spent seven uninterrupted hours wakeboarding, tubing, or anchoring out at the sandbar, you are rarely looking for an upscale, ninety-minute seated dining experience. You want hot, cheesy, budget-conscious fuel that can be carted back to the rental cabin deck in minutes. Big Cheese is an unapologetic, straightforward carryout haven designed precisely for that moment.
While newcomer visitors occasionally mistake it for a full-service Italian parlor, longtime lake vacationers and Mineral locals know the score immediately. This is not a candlelight-and-chianti date night venue; it is a rapid-fire pizza workshop built on affordability, thick cheese blankets, and crowd-pleasing simplicity. Knowing what to expect before you walk through the glass door will help you unlock its genuine strengths as one of the best value-per-slice stops on the south side of the lake.
The Atmosphere: Raw, Functional Grab-and-Go
Step inside the storefront and you will immediately notice that aesthetics take a distant back seat to production. The layout is stripped-down and purely transactional. You will see commercial conveyor ovens humming away, stacked beverage cases awaiting restocking, and an open kitchen view where dough is stretched and topped in full sight. While there may be a bench or a utilitarian table available, virtually nobody eats inside. This is an authentic 100% grab-and-go operation where the entire floor plan is optimized to get piping-hot boxes into your hands so you can head back out.
The counter experience can feel distinctly old-school rural Virginia. At peak times, the atmosphere is brisk and hectic, with staff prioritizing ticket tickets as orders stream in from phone rings and digital notifications. There is no polished front-of-house host stand; customer service is direct, no-frills, and fast-paced. If you arrive expecting white-glove hospitality, you will be in the wrong place, but if you treat it like a friendly neighborhood dockside depot, it delivers exactly what it promises.
Local Tip
Skip ordering at the physical counter during prime weekend dinner hours. Instead, call your order directly into the shop 35 to 45 minutes ahead. While online ordering via Toast exists, custom split requests—like half-garlic-parmesan and half-buffalo wings or half-mushroom pizzas—are handled far more accurately when spoken directly to the kitchen crew over the phone.
What Hits the Spot: Menu Breakdown
The menu covers all the essential bases of classic American pizzeria fare, leaning into heavier, savory profiles that feed hungry families without draining vacation wallets. The core product is their hand-tossed and deep dish pies, available in sizes running all the way up to extra-large 16-inch diameters. The crust hits a satisfying balance of chew and crispness, with pepperoni slices that curl up nicely around the edges. Yes, the pies can lean on the oilier, heartier side, but that golden, well-melted cheese pull is precisely why vacation rental groups order them by the stack.
Beyond standard cheese and meat-heavy pies, the kitchen turns out specialty items that have built a loyal local following. Their Buffalo Chicken Pizza and hot honey-tossed items are frequent crowd favorites. For those wanting an alternative to circular pies, they serve massive hot subs stretching from 8-inch lunch bites up to 15-inch double-handed monsters loaded with Philly steak, toasted cheeses, and deli meats. Add in bone-in chicken wings with crisp skin, savory garlic parmesan sauce, and warm marinara-dipped breadsticks, and you have an effortless feast capable of silencing an entire house of hungry teenagers.

Logistics, Timing & Practical Takeout Wisdom
Parking at 11004 Kentucky Springs Road is simple and effortless, featuring flat storefront spaces right off the highway with plenty of turning room, even if you are pulling a mid-sized pontoon trailer or personal watercraft hauler. Because the store focuses exclusively on takeout, turnarounds are steady, and parking turnover is rapid.
Timing your visit, however, requires smart planning during summer peak season. Friday afternoons between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM see an influx of travelers arriving from Richmond, Northern Virginia, and Fredericksburg checking into their Lake Anna short-term rentals. Everyone has the same idea: nobody wants to unpack groceries and cook on their first night. During this window, ticket wait times can climb quickly to 45 minutes or longer. Place your order while you are wrapping up your drive into Mineral to ensure the boxes are sliding out of the oven the exact moment you pull into the lot.
Local Tip
Always verify your physical printed receipt at the counter when you pay or pick up. Lake Anna regulars recommend double-checking line-item totals and gratuity prompts before heading out the door to ensure your total matches your expected order slip.
The Bottom Line for Lake Anna Visitors
Big Cheese Pizza holds down an essential niche on the southern stretches of Lake Anna. It doesn't aim to compete with lakeside cocktail bars or artisanal wood-fired trattorias; it delivers fast, hot, affordable slices when efficiency and volume matter most. If you approach it as an effortless carryout solution for boat days, late cabin check-ins, or casual game nights on the porch, Big Cheese Pizza will keep your entire crew full and content all weekend long.

"Definitely the best grab and go place in the area but needs some improvement. The pizza itself was super delicious, the pepperonis were nice and crispy and the crust had a perfect texture, but it’s a tad too oily. Overall good bang for you buck giving a 16” is $14. Service was also good. The people at the store are super nice and the food came out decently fast for a freshly made pizza. The main thing is the store itself. There was no menu, and we were told to scan a QR code that took us to their online ordering app, which was weird. Other than the menu, the kitchen was plainly in sight and the place was quite unorganized with packages of drinks all around the place, and the place is just kind of run down. But I guess if it’s grab and go the food just needs to be good, which it is. Overall great pizza at a great price, but I would takeout rather than eating in."
"It's mostly take out for us and probably others as well. Never seen anyone eat inside. Food is good, I like their Buffalo wings and Pizza. Everything is reasonably priced. Subs sizes range from 8" to 15". Toast works sometimes, otherwise best to call in your order if there is something "special" you want, i.e. mushrooms on 1/2 of pizza, or "16 wings" 8 buffalo and 8 garlic parm, as they don't give you a space to put additional info online. Otherwise, for less expensive options, this place isn't a bad choice. Wings are good size, pizza is usually cooked well or crust is done. Give it a try."
"First time ever stopping here. Pass by the place about everyday on the way to a client i take care of. The young man wearing a lucky rooster black baseball cap and has tattoos on his arm was about the rudest and most unwelcoming customer service I have ever experienced at any establishment I've been in. I came in and just ordered a simple order of breasticks for $5.49 and as soon as I walk up to the counter the young man goes "what do you want it'll be at least 45 minutes" I asked him how much the bread sticks were and he attitude about that I guess because he had to click a few buttons to just look the price up. So I procced to order and tap my card to pay and before it even finished the transaction he had just walked away. He's also not using gloves as I sit inside waiting for my order, no gloves when gloves should be used and whatever he is wearing today (T-Shirt and shorts) most definitely hasn't been washed in a while. I've never left a Google review in my life but I am today. I was the business owner he would no longer work for me. Just his attitude alone with customers is so unpleasant and he's also not taking any of the sanitarty precautions required by law while making food items for the public. The bread sticks themselves were decent though for the price. If your looking for quick service, don't expect it. If you're looking for any type of customer service that is anything near satisfactory or just normal definitely don't expect it from him. My first time coming here and it will be my last time coming here just because of the employee encounter."
