Sturgeon Creek Marina Inc
5107 Courthouse Rd, Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA 22551, USALive Scout Deep Dive
Tucked off Courthouse Road along the sheltered waters of its namesake cove, Sturgeon Creek Marina Inc has stood as a cornerstone of Lake Anna life for more than half a century. Rather than chasing the sanitized, high-glitz resort aesthetic that has crept into modern waterfront developments, this beloved outpost remains deeply rooted in traditional Virginia lake culture. It is unpretentious, hardworking, and immediately welcoming—a place where seasoned tournament bass anglers, generational cabin owners, and visiting families launching their weekend pontoons cross paths on sun-dappled docks. The overall atmosphere is relaxed and distinctly shaded; towering oak and pine hardwoods blanket the upland staging grounds and picnic clearings, offering a cool sanctuary from the scorching mid-Atlantic summer heat.
Situated on the bustling "public side" of Lake Anna, Sturgeon Creek serves as an essential nexus for both leisure boaters and serious anglers. Because the marina sits within a naturally protected inlet just off the main stem of the lake, launching and retrieving vessels here is remarkably tranquil compared to unprotected ramps. You are sheltered from the rolling midday cruisers and heavy wind chop that regularly churn up the open water, making it a favorite starting point for boaters who prefer a low-stress slipway experience.
Launch Facilities & Arrival Logistics
For day-trippers trailering their own craft, Sturgeon Creek is renowned as one of the best-engineered access points on Lake Anna. The marina features five wide, poured-concrete boat launch lanes designed to accommodate everything from low-profile fiberglass bass rigs to deep-draft tri-toons and wake boats. Even better for small craft owners, there is a designated personal watercraft (PWC) launch area separate from the primary boat ramps, which significantly cuts down on bottlenecking during peak morning pushes.
Before backing down the grade, head inside the tackle shop to grab your ramp and parking pass. Military service members, veterans, and first responders will appreciate that the marina extends dedicated discounts on passes and select services. The trailer parking lot is nestled among the trees, providing shaded staging areas where you can tie down straps and pack coolers without baking in the asphalt sun. On bluebird summer Saturdays and major holiday weekends, arrival before 8:00 AM is essential to secure easy parking and avoid the mid-morning trailer rush.
Local Tip
If you are launching a jet ski, stay firmly within the dedicated PWC zone and park with caution. On jam-packed weekends, casual motorists without trailers occasionally squeeze into tow-vehicle spaces; take an extra moment to verify you have plenty of pull-out clearance so your trailer rig isn't boxed in while you are out on the water.
Tackle Shop, Marine Supplies & Fuel Dock
Sturgeon Creek operates two distinct retail areas on-site, acting as a true one-stop provisioner. The frontline Tackle Shop stocks everything needed for an impromptu or tournament-level outing: live minnows, worms, specialized soft plastics, topwater jigs, and terminal tackle dialed into Lake Anna's specific seasonal patterns. You will also find cold beverages, bags of ice, quick snacks, and lake charts. Nearby restrooms are located right beside the facilities, sparing families with young children the arduous hikes common at state park ramps.
Adjacent to the bait counter is the marine parts department—affectionately dubbed "Everything But Bait". Here, you will find bilge pumps, impellers, marine oil, replacement trailer lights, hardware, and safety gear. The marina's fuel dock provides ethanol-free fuel, an absolute must for prolonging the life of carbureted marine outboards and sensitive fuel injection systems. Fuel pumps are accessible both directly from the water via the staging dock and from land, allowing trailered boats to top off before hitting the water.
Service Department & Pontoon Rentals
As an authorized sales and service center for major engine lines including Mercury, Johnson, Evinrude, and MerCruiser sterndrives, the marina’s mechanical yard provides full-service care ranging from winterization and shrink-wrapping to major powerhead overhauls. While the staff and mechanics are deeply knowledgeable, keep in mind that the mechanical parts counter is routinely closed on Mondays, and repair waitlists can stretch during the height of the summer boating rush. Planning routine service, winter tune-ups, or summer maintenance ahead of time pays massive dividends.
For visitors who do not trailer a boat to the lake, Sturgeon Creek maintains a rental fleet of pontoon boats available for daily and multi-day hire. These vessels are utilitarian, rugged workhorses engineered for casual cruising, dockside swimming, and family fishing outings. While they are dependable platforms to get you onto Lake Anna’s waters, they are straightforward functional fleet craft rather than luxury cruisers. Be sure to inspect your rental, confirm safety vest counts, and grab a navigational map inside the shop before you throttle out of the creek.
Local Tip
Heading out toward the main lake? Pay close attention to your depth sounder and keep an eye on channel markers as you idle through the Sturgeon Creek no-wake zone. The protected cove is an exceptional staging ground, but shallow flats line the secondary points—maintain a centered course until you round into the open channel.
The Tournament Epicenter of Lake Anna
Beyond recreational slip holding and ramp passes, Sturgeon Creek Marina serves as the undisputed tournament capital of Lake Anna. Throughout the calendar year, the marina plays host to regional bass trails, collegiate circuits, the Sturgeon Creek Elite Series, and high-energy Tuesday Night Tournaments. During the cooler months, the famed Winter Series draws dedicated anglers weighing in massive five-fish limits of largemouth and striper. If you visit on a tournament weigh-in afternoon, grab an ice cream or cold drink from the store and watch the weigh-ins on the dock—it is one of the truest community spectacles Lake Anna has to offer.

Recent Impressions
"Parts department is closed on Mondays and the bait shop went the extra mile to get a part for me. Told them I could wait until tomorrow but he was nice enough to get and meet him at the tackle shop. Thank you, the impeller is in and motor is peeing like a champ. Thank you so much."
"We used to go to the State Park and unload the boat for a while. Until we came across this wonderful place!! Sooo much easier to load and unload our boats, for our kids to use the restrooms (without walking a couple miles), get snacks, etc. Not to mention the staff is amazing! They are always so kind and willing to help you if you need it! Will NEVER go anywhere else!"
"Based on the relatively high reviews, we were excited to rent a pontoon boat for our week at Lake Anna. However we were quickly disappointed with the condition of the boat. Virtually every seat was ripped, there was only 1 anchor, if you took your hands off the steering wheel for a second, the boat would quickly veer to the right, and someone had made a hole for wires in the bottom of the boat that then allow water to splash up from underneath, so the deck was always wet and you couldn't keep any bags or towels there. Pardon the pun, but it felt like a bait and switch as the picture on the website sure didn't match what we got. And for as much as we paid for the week, a complimentary lake map would have been appropriate but even that was not included. On the positive side, it did stay afloat for the week and that was the most important thing. However, we will not be returning customers."
