Christopher Run Campground
6478 Zachary Taylor Hwy, Mineral, VA 23117, USALive Scout Deep Dive
Tucked along the shaded, serpentine shores of upper Lake Anna, Christopher Run Campground carries the golden-era charm of classic Mid-Atlantic lake life. Operating since 1973—when founders Sam and Jean Bazzanella carved out tent pads and built the lake's very first recreational boat launch just after Hurricane Agnes filled the reservoir—this generational retreat has grown into an iconic institution for anglers, outdoor families, and seasoned RVers alike. The atmosphere is thoroughly laid-back, welcoming, and delightfully unpretentious. Mornings unfold to the distant, rhythmic hum of bass boats clearing the no-wake buoys, while evenings smell of split oak campfires, charcoal barbecue, and pine needles cooling in the twilight.
Unlike sterilized, cookie-cutter modern RV resorts that prioritize asphalt pads over trees, Christopher Run preserves the wooded, organic texture of rural Louisa County. Paved access roads loop gently down toward the shoreline, providing smooth navigation for kids on bicycles, dog walkers, and campers making their morning pilgrimage to the camp store. The property strikes a natural balance between vibrant family energy at the playgrounds and swimming beach during warm summer afternoons, and tranquil solitude along the fishing coves at dawn.
Local Tip
If you are renting one of the camper cabins or full-service lodges, treat it as a step above primitive glamping rather than a hotel stay. Linens, bath towels, cookware, and eating utensils are not stocked, and on-site refrigeration in standard units is compact. Bring a high-efficiency cooler packed with block ice for weekend groceries, and make sure your duffel includes full bedding, cooking essentials, and an electric kettle or skillet.
The Marina & The Fishermen's Gateway
Ask any tournament angler or serious crappie chaser on Lake Anna, and they will point you straight to Christopher Run's boat launch complex. Nestled in a deep, protected cove, the facility features six wide, paved launch lanes that shield trailers and hulls from the punishing wind and main-lake swells. Because the campground sits perched right near the intersection where the upper North Anna River arm meets the fertile waters of Pamunkey Creek, launching here puts you squarely in prime water without spending half a tank of gas on a long, choppy boat run from downstream.
For boaters staying multiple nights, the campground operates a 50-slip wet marina, allowing you to tie off your vessel after dusk rather than trailering each evening. If you don’t own a motorboat, you can take advantage of the camp store's watercraft fleet, including canoes, rowboats, kayaks, and paddleboats, ideal for lazy paddles toward Christopher Run Bridge and quiet inlets teeming with bluegill, largemouth, and heron. Day visitors can also tap into the action; a day pass ($15 per vehicle) grants access to the launch ramps, trailer parking, and the swim beach.

Campsites, Cabins & Lodging Logistics
Spanning more than 200 campsites across wooded hillsides, Christopher Run offers an accommodation type for nearly every camping style. Big rigs will appreciate the 38 full-hookup sites equipped with 20/30/50 amp electrical pedestals, water, and direct sewer lines, alongside pull-through spaces designed to accommodate larger fifth wheels and travel trailers. An additional 42 sites offer dedicated water and 30-amp electric hookups, while secluded primitive tent zones cater to those looking to keep things stripped-down and centered around the fire ring.
For non-RVers seeking shelter, Christopher Run offers rustic camper cabins and full-service lodges. These air-conditioned pine-walled units offer a cozy roof, comfortable bunk or queen configurations, and front porches where you can sit and watch the trees sway. However, seasoned visitors stress the importance of understanding the property's rustic philosophy: these cabins are designed as base camps for lake adventures, not luxury resort villas. Clean bathhouses with hot showers and flush toilets are dispersed throughout the grounds, and an on-site laundromat makes multi-day stays manageable.
Local Tip
If you find the water pressure or temperature fluctuating in the bathhouse nearest to the boat ramps during prime morning or evening rush hours, take a short stroll to the upper loops. The secondary bathhouses higher up the hill see far less foot traffic and consistently offer piping-hot showers and faster stall turnover.
Campground Activities & Everyday Life
What makes Christopher Run a perennial favorite for multi-generational families is that you rarely need to start your engine once your jacks are down. Children congregate around the classic outdoor playground with seesaws, swing sets, and basketball courts, while older kids migrate toward the miniature golf course and arcade game room. A roped swimming beach provides a calm, sandy shoreline where toddlers can splash in gentle shallows while parents set up lawn chairs under the Virginia oaks.
The camp store serves as the social epicenter of the grounds. Run by long-tenured, friendly staff, it is stocked with everyday camp necessities: bagged ice, bundles of dry hardwood firewood, s’mores supplies, cold drinks, ice cream bars, and LP propane refills. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the campground also hosts outdoor pavilion gatherings, weekend events, and Sunday morning open-air church services. Check-in is handled through the dedicated entrance gatehouse, which remains staffed late into the evening during peak weekends, ensuring that even if you encounter Friday evening traffic along the I-95 corridor or Route 522, someone will be there to hand you your pass and point your rig down the correct tree-lined road.

"At first upon arriving, we get to the check in booth at 11:00 pm there was someone manning it. That is good service. We set up camp and slept well till the next day. The morning was quiet and the showers are cold (in the bathhouse closest to the lake). There were multiple people smoking weed throughout the day so it smelled very good. If you want to have a very good time go under Christopher’s bridge. There is a rope swing and it is very cool."
"Overall we had a good experience staying in one of the “full service” lodges. I was disappointed with how little was provided though. For the price we paid, it would’ve been nice to have even a few basic kitchen utensils or linens included. Thankfully I had done research prior to our stay and packed close to everything we needed. I wouldn’t recommend staying for more than 3 nights at a time. I have a family of 4 and the cabin only has a *hardly running* mini fridge so storing groceries quickly became a big obstacle resulting in our fruit and meat starting to go bad by our second evening there and us needing to throw a good amount away. Even still, my family had a great time, it didn’t get too noisy (even for our 9 month old), the staff was extremely pleasant and helpful, and the cabins were, overall, very cozy"
