Nestled a stone's throw from the sun-drenched shores of Lake Anna, Cooling Pond Brewery & Winery offers a serene and welcoming escape for locals and visitors alike. As a veteran-owned and family-operated establishment, it exudes a genuine warmth that sets it apart from more commercial ventures. The prevailing atmosphere is one of relaxed, rustic comfort. It's decidedly casual and exceptionally family-friendly, making it a go-to spot for multi-generational groups looking to unwind after a day on the water. This isn't a high-energy party spot, but rather a place to savor handcrafted beverages, enjoy the countryside, and connect with friends and family in a low-key setting.
The aesthetic charm of Cooling Pond lies in its thoughtful blend of indoor and outdoor spaces. Inside the main tasting room, a large stone fireplace serves as the centerpiece, offering a cozy haven during cooler months. The interior is comfortable and spacious, with plenty of seating. However, the expansive outdoor patio is the true star of the show. Perched on a gentle hill, it provides lovely breezes and picturesque views of the surrounding Virginia countryside. It’s the perfect setting for enjoying live music on a weekend afternoon or simply watching the sunset with a drink in hand. The overall vibe is welcoming to all, including four-legged friends, who are welcome to join you on the patio.
Local Tip
Don't be in a rush when you arrive. The pace here is relaxed, reflecting the Lake Anna lifestyle. Also, check their Facebook page before you go; it's the most reliable source for the latest information on food truck schedules, live music acts, and special events or modified hours.
What to Order: Libations & Food
Cooling Pond distinguishes itself by offering both craft beer and local wine, catering to a wider range of tastes. The brewery's heart is in its approachable, English-inspired ales, many cleverly named after historic local taverns. For those new to their beer, ordering a flight is the best way to sample the variety. A popular choice is the award-winning Boswell's Tavern, an Extra Special Bitter (ESB), but don't shy away from their rotating selections which often include juicy IPAs like the Swim Advisory, rich stouts, and crisp lagers. For non-beer drinkers, the winery side features a curated selection of wines from the renowned Barboursville Vineyards. You can expect to find glasses of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Cabernet Sauvignon available. Prices are reasonable, with pints generally in the $7.50-$8.50 range and 5oz tasters around $3.00-$3.50. Wine glasses hover between $11 and $14, with bottles also available for purchase.
The food program has evolved to become a significant draw. While they sometimes host food trucks, especially on weekends, they now have their own kitchen serving up what recent visitors have described as excellent and quick food. The menu seems to focus on high-quality, beer-friendly fare. Standouts mentioned in reviews include inventive flatbreads like white pesto and delicious wings, with flavors ranging from hot honey BBQ to garlic parm. The kitchen ensures that you won't go hungry, a notable improvement that elevates the entire experience.
Logistics & Best Times to Visit
Located on Zachary Taylor Highway (Route 522), Cooling Pond is easily accessible and offers ample parking. The brewery is typically open five days a week during the summer season, from Wednesday through Sunday, with weekend hours starting at noon. Weekday evenings offer a quieter, more intimate experience with "bar bites" and activities. Weekends are livelier, featuring live music acts on the outdoor stage and a bustling, yet still relaxed, crowd. Saturday and Sunday afternoons are the most popular times, especially after lake-goers have had their fill of the sun. If you prefer a more tranquil visit, aim for a weekday evening or arrive right at opening on the weekend. No formal reservations are needed; the seating, both inside and out, is plentiful and first-come, first-served.

Know Before You Go

Recent Impressions
"What a great time! I will be back! Great performers, even let me sing with them. Loved everything about it!"
"We stopped in on a Sunday around 12:30 and found the place empty. Turns out all the folks in the area are enjoying Lake Anna and don't come out till they're done with the sun. The bartender was very nice, poured us a nice flight of their beers and let us chill for a bit. We didn't try any of the food. None of the beers jumped out at me as extra special but everything was drinkable and they have a nice variety of styles, so something for everyone. The tasting room is nice, and there's a nice amount of outdoor space as well. We live visiting breweries around VA so we're glad we stopped in."
"I visited at about 1 in the afternoon on Mother's Day Sunday. I was looking to get some lunch and a beer, I found a great beer, but there was no menu in sight. The bartender seemed to only care about putting me the beer and starting my tab, while i didn't ask, he also didn't mention food. I kinda wanted a second beer, but the service was so slow, even though they were not busy, I finally just paid my tab and left."
