Live Scout Deep Dive
Nestled within the vibrant Lake Anna Boardwalk, Moo Thru is a beloved local institution and an essential stop for anyone visiting the lake. This isn't just any ice cream shop; it's the sweet, creamy heart of the lakeside experience, serving up farm-fresh goodness with a side of stunning water views. The vibe is pure, distilled summertime joy—casual, bustling, and overwhelmingly family-friendly. The air buzzes with the happy chatter of families fresh off the boat, couples enjoying a sweet date, and kids eagerly pointing at the colorful tubs of ice cream. It’s the kind of place where memories are made, one delicious, drippy scoop at a time.
The aesthetic is classic, cheerful ice cream parlor meets modern lakeside boardwalk. Located conveniently underneath the popular restaurant Tim's at Lake Anna, the shop is bright and welcoming. While the interior is mostly for ordering, the real atmosphere is found outside. Grab your cone or cup and find a spot along the wooden boardwalk, letting the gentle lake breeze and the picturesque view of the water dotted with boats be the backdrop to your treat. It's a quintessential Lake Anna scene, combining the simple pleasure of a cold treat with the beauty and energy of the lake.
Local Tip
Moo Thru is fully boat-accessible, with slips available at the Boardwalk. Coming by water is the ultimate Lake Anna experience. Tie up your boat, walk a few steps, and you're in ice cream heaven. It’s the perfect way to take a break from tubing or cruising on a hot day.
The Scoop on What to Order
What sets Moo Thru apart is its unwavering commitment to quality, a "cow to cone" philosophy that you can taste in every bite. The ice cream is handcrafted in small batches in nearby Remington, VA, using fresh milk from the Smith family's fourth-generation dairy farm and their champion Holstein cows. This results in a slow-churned, incredibly rich, and creamy product that has earned national recognition. You'll find about 13 flavors available daily, a mix of timeless classics and creative concoctions, with seasonal specials making appearances throughout the year.
Must-Try Flavors
Fan favorites include the decadent Bourbon Caramel, Cookies and Cream, and the coconut-and-almond-laden Moundz. The simple Swiss Chocolate is a testament to their quality ingredients, offering a deep, rich chocolate flavor. For something different, keep an eye out for seasonal specials like Peach or Apple Pie.
Vessels & Creations
While a simple cup or cake cone is always a good choice, the homemade waffle cones and bowls are a delicious upgrade. They also whip up fantastic milkshakes (a regular is $7.99, a large is $8.95) and classic root beer floats. Sundaes are another popular option, though it's worth noting some specialty items, like brownie sundaes, may not always be available depending on supply.
Pricing
Prices reflect the premium, farm-fresh quality. Expect a single scoop in a cake cone or cup to be around $4.49, with a single in a waffle cone or bowl costing about $5.95. A double scoop waffle cone is approximately $7.99. You can also take home a pint for $9.00 or a quart for $18.00 to enjoy later.
For the Pups!
Don't leave your four-legged friends out! Moo Thru is pup-friendly and offers "Pup Cups" so your furry companion can enjoy a special treat right alongside you on the boardwalk.
Logistics & What to Expect
Given its prime location and stellar reputation, Moo Thru is a popular spot, especially during the peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day) and on sunny weekends. Expect a line, particularly in the evenings. However, the staff is known for being efficient and friendly, so the line typically moves quickly. Seating is informal and consists of benches and tables along the public boardwalk, which can fill up fast. Many patrons enjoy their ice cream while strolling along the waterfront or finding a spot to sit and watch the boats go by. Parking is available in the general Boardwalk lot, which it shares with other businesses like Tim's and Below Deck Deli, but it can get congested during peak times.
Local Tip
The Boardwalk complex is a destination in itself. Make an afternoon or evening of it. You can grab a casual meal of pizza or sandwiches at Below Deck, enjoy a seafood dinner upstairs at Tim's, and then cap it all off with a cone from Moo Thru for dessert. It's the perfect, easy-going Lake Anna dining experience.
Moo Thru Lake Anna is more than just a place to get dessert; it's a core part of the local culture and a cherished tradition for visitors and locals alike. The combination of genuinely high-quality, farm-fresh ice cream and an unbeatable lakeside location makes it an absolute must-visit. Whether you arrive by car or by boat, a sweet treat from Moo Thru is the perfect way to cool off, relax, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Lake Anna.
Recent Impressions
"Me and my husband stopped on our way home from our trip to the mountains. He got a double choc. (Hersheys syrup & hot fudge) sundae with whipped cream, I had a LG choc milkshake with whipped cream. We enjoyed them, the only thing I will say is my choc shake could have definitely been more chocolatey."
"Cookies and cream Ice cream was really good. Had a good time sitting by the lake."
"Nice ice cream spot along the Lake Anna Boardwalk. They have the flavors that Moo Thru fans are accustomed to, but not everything else that the other locations have (e.g. brownies for the brownie sundae like the Dairy Market location). Line was wrapped to the door, but plenty of staff working on a Saturday evening, so it moved quickly. Since a brownie sundae wasn't an option, we opted to share a waffle bowl with 3 scoops (cookies and cream, moundz, and coffee). The ice cream is always good. Definitely appreciate that they offer pup cups at this location!"
