Welcome Campfire: DCR 100th Anniversary at Lake Anna State Park
Program Details & Spotlights
Celebrate 100 years of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation with a special ranger-led campfire! This free educational program invites campers and park visitors of all ages to gather around a warm campfire, listen to tales of the park's history and natural treasures, and pick up camping tips and tricks from state park experts. It is a classic outdoor gathering where you can sit under the stars and learn about the local ecology and history of the Lake Anna area.
There is something magical about twilight at Lake Anna State Park. As the sun dips below the tree line, painting the sky in brilliant hues of orange and purple, the park transforms into a serene woodland sanctuary. Gathering around a crackling fire is a time-honored tradition here, but this particular evening holds a special significance. This campfire program marks the historic 100th anniversary of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). It’s a rare opportunity to celebrate a century of preserving the Commonwealth's most breathtaking natural spaces right here in our favorite lakeside haven.
For those who call Lake Anna home—or those just visiting for the weekend—this event offers a deep dive into the fascinating history of the park. Long before it became a premier destination for boaters and anglers, this land was bustling with gold miners during the 19th-century gold rush at the old Goodwin Gold Mine. The park rangers, who are passionate stewards of this land, will weave these historical tales together with stories of the local ecology, helping you understand how this vibrant ecosystem evolved into the treasure it is today.
Whether you are a seasoned backcountry camper or a family setting up a tent for the very first time, the ranger-led demonstration is packed with value. You’ll pick up practical, hands-on camping tips and tricks, from mastering the perfect fire-building technique to wildlife-proofing your campsite. Underneath a canopy of towering pines and a blanket of emerging stars, this cozy gathering fosters a wonderful sense of community that defines the Lake Anna lifestyle.
This is a completely free, all-ages event that perfectly captures the soul of Virginia's state parks. Grab your favorite camp blanket, bring your curiosity, and get ready to connect with the great outdoors and your fellow nature lovers in a way that only a Lake Anna campfire can deliver.
