Concerts by Canoe
Program Details & Spotlights
Float under a summer sky and enjoy a concert on the lake at Motts Run Reservoir. The featured performer is the Harry Wilson Quartet, playing a smooth jazz set. Pack a picnic dinner and bring your own boat (electric or manual only, no gas motors), or rent a canoe or kayak from the reservoir pier to drift peacefully on the water while listening to the music.
While we love the roaring wake and open waters of Lake Anna, local insiders know that just a short drive down Route 3 lies one of the region’s best-kept secrets for a peaceful evening retreat: Motts Run Reservoir. This summer, the reservoir is transforming into a floating amphitheater for "Concerts by Canoe," offering a magical way to wind down. Imagine drifting on mirror-like waters surrounded by pristine hardwood forests, all while the smooth, soulful sounds of the Harry Wilson Quartet drift across the bay. It’s a completely different rhythm from the daytime buzz of the lake, making it the perfect micro-getaway for locals and visitors alike.
What makes this event so special is the intentional quiet of Motts Run. Unlike Lake Anna’s main tri-county waters, gas-powered motors aren’t allowed here. This means the soundtrack to your evening is purely the gentle lap of water against your hull, the evening songbirds, and world-class live jazz. The Harry Wilson Quartet is renowned in the Virginia music scene for their rich, improvisational sets that seem almost tailor-made for a sunset paddle. As the humidity of the afternoon breaks, you’ll find yourself floating effortlessly, completely immersed in the music and nature.
Whether you’re a seasoned paddler pulling your own kayak from the roof rack or a beginner looking to try something new, the setup at the reservoir pier is incredibly welcoming. You can launch your own manual or electric-powered boat, or take advantage of the on-site rentals. Paddle out to find your perfect acoustic sweet spot near the shoreline, throw out a small anchor if you have one, or simply raft up with friends to create a floating concert barge of your own.
Why You Should Attend
- Unmatched Atmosphere: There is nothing quite like hearing live, acoustic-driven jazz bounce off the water as the sun dips below the tree line.

- Perfect Date Night or Family Outing: It’s incredibly versatile—pack a romantic spread for two or load up a canoe with the kids for a memorable summer tradition.
- Support Local Arts & Parks: This event highlights the incredible local musical talent of the Fredericksburg region and showcases the preservation of our gorgeous local waterways.
Insider Tips from a Lake Anna Local
- Arrive Early for Rentals: Boat rentals (canoes and single/tandem kayaks) are available on-site at the pier, but they are first-come, first-served and highly popular for this event. Aim to arrive by 5:15 PM to secure yours.
- Pack a "Floating" Picnic: Bring finger foods and easy-to-manage snacks. Heavy plates and messy foods are tough to navigate while balancing a paddle. Don't forget koozies and a small dry bag for your trash.
- Bring a Headlamp or Lantern: While the concert wraps up at 8:30 PM just as twilight fades, navigating back to the boat launch in the dusk is much easier (and safer) with a hands-free light source.
- Anchor Up: If you are bringing your own kayak or canoe, a small, inexpensive folding anchor is a game-changer. It keeps you from drifting into the brush or other boats while you are lost in the music.
- Check the Weather & Bug Prep: Being near the water at dusk means mosquitoes might want to join the audience. Pack some eco-friendly bug spray and a light long-sleeve shirt just in case the evening breeze gets cool.
